Day 29 May Blog Challenge-5 Decades

Today’s May Blog Challenge is:

Day 29, Wednesday: Five songs or pieces of music that speak to you or bring back memories. Use Grooveshark or YouTube to include them in the post

There are so many songs that have delighted, comforted and encouraged my life but I thought it would be fun to take a song from each of the decades I have fully lived through.  So here is a walk down memory lane…

The 60’s – On Broadway  (The Drifters) – – Memory:  About 10 years old, warm summer evening, it’s dark and I think we may have gone out for pizza at a new place in downtown San Jose  (not a normal occurrence for my family of 6), window is down in back seat, the air that is cooling down breathes itself on me like a bunch of little kisses, the store lights are sparkling as people move this way and that and  and this song is playing on the station wagon radio – magical.  My life is full of possibilities…

The 70’s  – Fire and Rain (James Taylor) – – Memory:  I was in junior high and learning how to play the guitar.  I would carry my guitar in its case close to 3/4 of a mile to and from school every M – W – F and this was one of the songs I learned.  It was a grown up song with a sweet simplicity in the melody and words but not easy to play which is so reflective of life at times.

The 80’s – We Built This City (Jefferson Starship) – – Memory:  The 80’s were about being in the early years of marriage, going to Hawaii and having babies.  I remember being in our family room and my young children loved to dance to this song.  They danced with abandon and joy.

The 90’s – Baby Baby (Amy Grant) – – Memory:  God has used Amy Grant’s music to speak to my heart in good and bad times but this was definitely a good time.  My 3-year-old nephew was visiting us from Oregon.  Because we were in AZ it made visits far and few between but I can remember singing this song to him as Amy sang in the background and for that trip it became our song.  One of my greatest joys is being aunt to 8 amazing individuals and I have memories of each I carry with me – but this was a Chad and Aunt Debbie moment.

The 2000’s – Corner of the Sky (William Katt) – – Memory:  A shake up of husband’s job found me leaving a job at a elementary school that I loved to spread my wings and take a job at the local university.  I listened to this song while processing the sadness of leaving with the hope for the future.  It was so appropriate the school I was leaving was Horizon Charter School and they were the Eagles.
